What To Expect In The Real World Of Landing That First Job After College |
On April 15, 2008, the Richmond Chapter of NAAAHR reached out to students—mostly graduating seniors—at the campus of Virginia Union University (VUU). The students participated in a panel discussion with practicing HR Professionals from the NAAAHR Richmond Chapter. Mark Hasty, Michelle Wingo, and Lucritia Mizzelle anchored by team leader Linda JacksonShaw , provided an |

excellent overview to the students of “What To Expect In The Real World Of Landing That 1st Job After College”. As a well polished relay team passing a baton between them, The Panel expertly navigated this important topic—Workplace 101—utilizing humor and real life stories that definitely made a connection with the VUU students. |

Michelle began by advising the group of the process in making the decision about which job to accept. She discussed personal budgets, knowing of the salary range for the job market for the position one is seeking, negotiating the salary and benefits. She reminded the group that the salary is important—but always evaluate the whole package being offered—not just the dollars.
- Lucritia reviewed some of the standard benefits offered by most organizations advising the group to pay particular attention to medical and retirement savings plans. She encouraged the group to begin a savings plan as soon as possible once employed. She concluded by telling the group that new hire orientation provides an excellent overview and is the best way to learn how to access the organization’s benefits offerings.
- Linda followed with a very amusing but on target review of what to wear on the interview as well as workplace attire. Her lasting theme was know the culture of your organization, think about where you are going and by all means use your mirror to check yourself over before leaving your house.
- Mark pulled up at the rear speaking on topics such as workplace harassment and social conduct in the workplace. He skillfully reminded the group that although they may be participating in a social setting with coworkers—you are still at work! Always be mindful of your conduct in these situations. He warned not to become involved in the workplace gossip network that often exists. He summed up his comments by encouraging each person in attendance that they should seek out a mentor when starting a new job to help navigate through the organization’s culture.

The session went on a little longer than originally planned simply because the students had so many fine questions. This in my view was one of THE BEST programs ever tackled by the chapter—sharing knowledge, experience and wisdom with students ready to venture into the world of work
Good Luck To All Of Our Graduates That Are Working To Land That 1st Job!
